Most consumer routers are underpowered and locked down. OpenWrt is an open-source Linux operating system for embedded devices (routers). It turns a 500 enterprise firewall.

Why Flash OpenWrt?
- Bufferbloat Management (SQM): Does your ping spike when someone watches Netflix? SQM (Smart Queue Management) fixes this by prioritizing small packets (gaming/calls) over bulk downloads.
- VLANs (Virtual LANs): Isolate your IoT devices. Why should your smart lightbulb have access to your laptop? Put them on a separate guest network.
- VPN Server: Host a WireGuard server on your router. Connect to your home network securely from a coffee shop.
- No Backdoors: Vendor firmware often has hardcoded credentials or unpatched vulnerabilities. OpenWrt is community-audited.
The Risks (The "Brick" Factor)
Flashing firmware is dangerous.
- Soft Brick: You messed up the config. Fixable via TFTP recovery.
- Hard Brick: You flashed the wrong file or lost power. Requires a soldering iron and Serial (TTL) cable to fix.
Rule #1: ALWAYS check the OpenWrt Table of Hardware (ToH) before buying a router. Ensure it has "Stable" support.
Getting Started
- Find your Router Model Revision (e.g., Archer C7 v5).
- Download the "Factory Install" image
.binfile. - Go to your Router's current Admin Page -> Firmware Upgrade.
- Upload the OpenWrt file.
- Wait 5 minutes. DO NOT UNPLUG POWER.
